Cognizant Joins Other IT Firms in ‘Bring Your Own Food’ Advisory

Cognizant has joined a growing list of IT giants in Pune advising employees to carry their own meals to work.
The company recently issued an internal communication to its staff at the Hinjewadi campus, citing logistical challenges that have hampered the regular operations of its on-site cafeterias and food courts.
Cognizant Navigating Supply Chain Constraints
The advisory, commonly referred to as “Bring Your Own Food” (BYOF), comes in response to a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders and broader supply chain inconsistencies affecting third-party food vendors.
These disruptions have led to a noticeable reduction in available food varieties and, in some instances, the temporary closure of specific meal counters during peak business hours.
Cognizant’s management informed employees that while the situation is being monitored closely, the measure is intended to ensure that staff members have access to reliable nutrition throughout their shifts.
The company is currently reviewing its contracts and working with regional suppliers to resolve the bottleneck, though a definitive timeline for a full return to normal cafeteria services has not yet been established.
The Impact of the Hybrid Workforce
As major IT firms continue to push for increased office attendance, the demand for campus infrastructure has surged.
The sudden strain on local utilities and logistical networks in the Hinjewadi IT hub has left several companies struggling to maintain large-scale catering services.
Industry experts suggest that sporadic “dry spells” in commercial gas supplies are occurring.
These shortages are forcing corporate facilities teams to rethink their dependency on centralized kitchens.
For the thousands of employees at the Pune facility, the advisory marks a temporary shift in office culture.
While essential snacks and beverages remain available, the traditional full-course lunch service has become unpredictable.
Future Outlook and Vendor Management
Cognizant is reportedly exploring alternative cooking technologies and diversified vendor partnerships to prevent future occurrences of such disruptions.
For now, the company has encouraged team leads to be flexible with break timings.
This accommodation helps those who may need to step out or manage their own meal logistics.
